The 'Gap Move' Checklist: Managing Your Administrative Transition

Published on August 26th, 2026

The admin side of moving house that has nothing to do with boxes, and  everything to do with making sure your life keeps working at the new  address.

The physical move gets all the attention, but the administrative transition is  where things quietly go wrong. A missed address change, an overlooked utility  transfer or a lapsed registration can create weeks of problems at the new  property. This checklist covers the administrative tasks that sit alongside the  physical move, organised by when they need to happen.

Before the Move: Four to Six Weeks Out

The administrative transition starts well before the truck arrives. Four to six  weeks out is the window for tasks that need processing time, notice periods or

appointments. Keeping a change of address checklist running alongside the  physical move plan prevents anything from falling through the cracks.

Task

Why It Matters

Notify your landlord or  settlement agent

Lease notice periods are typically 14 to 28 days. Missing this  creates overlap costs or legal complications.

Contact your energy  and gas provider

Most providers need 3 to 5 business days to transfer or  disconnect a service. Some require a final meter read  appointment.

Redirect your mail  through Australia Post

Mail redirection takes 2 to 3 business days to activate. A 12  month redirect catches anything you miss updating  individually.

Update your electoral  enrolment

The AEC requires enrolment at your current address. Update  as soon as possible after moving to avoid penalties.

Notify your health  insurance provider

Some providers have network restrictions by region. Confirm  coverage transfers before the move.

Two Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Two weeks out is the deadline for tasks that need to be active from day one at  the new address.

  • Transfer or connect internet and phone services. Most providers need 5 to 10  business days for a new connection, longer in regional areas or new estates.

  • Update your address with your bank, superannuation fund and any financial  institutions. Cards, statements and security correspondence will go to the old  address until this is done.

  • Notify your employer and update payroll records with the new address. This  affects tax, superannuation and emergency contact information.

  • Transfer or cancel home and contents insurance. Cover should be active at  the new address from the day you move in.

  • Book a final clean at the outgoing property if it is a rental. End of lease  cleaning should be booked at least two weeks in advance to secure a reliable  provider.

Moving Week

Moving week is for final confirmations and the tasks that can only happen once  the physical move is locked in.

  • Confirm utility disconnection dates at the old address and connection dates at the new address. Overlap by one day to avoid arriving to a house with no  power or water.

  • Take final meter readings at both properties and photograph them for your  records.

  • Notify your children's school of the new address and confirm enrolment at the new school if changing.

  • Update your address with your GP, dentist, specialist and pharmacy.  Prescription records and referrals are tied to your registered address.

  • Cancel or redirect any regular deliveries, subscriptions or meal services linked to the old address.

First Week at the New Address

Once the boxes are in, the administrative work continues. The first week is about confirming that everything transferred correctly and catching anything that was  missed. For the physical side of settling in, how to unpack after a move covers  the room by room approach that keeps the process manageable.

  • Test all utilities. Run taps, check hot water, test power points in every room,  confirm internet connectivity and check gas appliances if applicable.

  • Update your driver's licence with the new address. Each state and territory  sets its own deadline for this, so check with your local transport authority.  Most allow the update to be completed online.

  • Update your vehicle registration if you have moved interstate. Each state has  a different deadline and inspection requirement for transferring registration.

  • Register with a local GP if your previous practice is no longer accessible.  Transfer medical records before the first appointment.

  • Update your address with the ATO if it was not automatically updated through your employer or myGov account.

The Tasks Most People Forget

Some administrative tasks sit outside the standard checklist because they are  easy to overlook or seem too minor to prioritise. They are not.

Task

What Happens If You Miss It

Pet microchip  registration

Your contact details on the national register are wrong. If  your pet goes missing, the vet or council cannot reach you.

Loyalty and rewards  programs

Points, vouchers and member communications go to the old  address or the wrong store location.

Professional  registrations and licences

Governing bodies such as AHPRA, state law societies or trade licence boards require a current address on file.

Strata or body  corporate notification

If you are an owner, the body corporate needs your updated  contact details for levy notices and meeting invitations.

Emergency contacts at  your workplace

Your employer's records may still list your old address for  emergency contact or next of kin purposes.

Australia Post mail redirection typically activates within 2 to 3 business days of processing. A 12 month redirection is the most common option and catches any correspondence from organisations that were not individually notified of the address change. Singling out high priority senders such as banks, insurers and government agencies for direct notification is recommended alongside the redirect.

Electoral enrolment must be updated as soon as possible after moving. Driver's licence updates are required within a timeframe set by each state or territory. Vehicle registration must be transferred within a state specific deadline if moving interstate. Professional registrations with governing bodies such as AHPRA or state law societies also require a current address. Penalties vary but non compliance can result in fines or lapsed registrations.

Yes. Overlapping electricity, gas and water by one day at both the old and new address avoids the risk of arriving to a disconnected property. The cost of one day of overlap is minimal compared to the inconvenience of no power or hot water on moving day. Confirm connection dates with each provider at least two weeks before the move.
