Sydney Relocation – What To Expect When Moving To Sydney

Moving to Sydney

There has never been a better time to move to Sydney. With one of Australia’s lowest unemployment rates and housing affordability faring better than it has been in years, this may just be the perfect time to experience living in one of the world’s most iconic cities.

Blessed with superb beaches, historical sites, and world-class shopping, Sydney is like no other place in Australia. Even if you are born and bred in a big city like Melbourne, moving to Sydney can still be overwhelming!

Job hunting

New South Wales annual salary is high in comparison to Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania but this is counterbalanced by the fact that it generally has a higher cost of living.

The most legitimate sites for job hunters are established ones, such as Seek or Jobseeker. Sales sites such as Gumtree may have jobs advertised but this is not their speciality, so do your background research on advertisers and approach with some caution.

Recruitment companies are a fantastic resource for job seekers as they often have a list of available positions and can help you jump the queue if you are the right candidate for a job.

Overseas job seekers may find many jobs specify the requirement of an Australian work visa. If this is the case, check out websites such as Indeed where a more diverse range of jobs, including casual and vacation work, can be found.

Accommodation

Like most major cities, accommodation in Sydney can be expensive. Naturally, the further away from the CBD you are, the more affordable the cost of housing. Websites such as Domain and Real Estate.com.au offer the most comprehensive range of listings in the Buy and Lease markets as well as share accommodation.

For those with the money but no time to house hunt, there is always the option of enlisting the services of a personal house hunter to find the perfect property based on your shopping list of needs.

Getting around town

Each state has its own transportation ticketing system. In Sydney, public transport users require the purchase of an Opal card which is a contactless, smartcard with an extensive geographical reach and which utilises trains, buses, light rail and ferries. The card itself is free but requires a $10 minimum top up for adults and $5 for children.

Weekly adult tickets cost $63.20 which provides limitless travel on buses, trains, ferries and light rail within the Opal travel network. Alternatively, single trip fares will be based on distance travelled.
