Step 8: Finding Your Mattress’ New Home

Step 1: Remove All of Your Bedding

Unless you’re looking forward to damage and dirt, removing all of your bedding should be the first priority when planning how to move a mattress. To ensure that everything is ready to go once your new bedroom is set up, thoroughly wash, dry, and fold your bedding prior to putting it in its own separate moving box. By doing this, you’re at least ensured that your bed will be ready to go when you need it, even if the rest of your furnishings are still in disarray.

Step 2: Make Sure to Clear Some Room

One of the most difficult parts of planning how to move a mattress is the often-overwhelming number of objects that are between you and your front door. To make the entire process significantly easier, not to mention less frustrating, make sure that you clear out anything that may get in your way before starting the mattress moving process.

Step 3: Find Some Friends to Help You

Moving a mattress is something that can be taken on alone, but if you can get some friends together, the added help is going to make the entire process a lot smoother. While it may not be the most enticing of asks, offering a free meal can go a long way.

Step 4: Grab a Plastic Mattress Cover

While this may seem obvious, a fitted plastic mattress cover will allow you to avoid a considerable amount of unnecessary wear and tear during the moving process. Just make sure to wrap the mattress cover in tape to avoid movement, as this will give you the highest level of support.

Step 5: Make Sure You Know Where It’s Going

This step is for those that have several mattresses going to different places in their new home. To make sure that you know where all of your mattresses are to be placed, label each of your plastic mattress covers. For example, labeling your mattress “master bedroom” or “guest room” will make it easier once you get to your new home.

Step 6: Move Your Mattress

Now comes the tricky part. How your home is laid out will determine how difficult this process is. Try to avoid folding or bending your mattress, especially when it’s made of non-foam materials, such as coil springs. As with step 2, make sure that there is no clutter or furniture in your way before taking your mattress off its foundations. Asking a friend for assistance is never a bad idea!

Step 7: Putting the Mattress in the Van

When doing this, try to ensure that all mattresses are against the wall of your moving van, as this is the safest place with the lowest chance of damage. For those that are moving several mattresses at once, you should try to stack them against each other for additional support.

Step 8 – Finding Your Mattress’ New Home

Given that your new home should be relatively clutter free, assuming that this is the start of your move, getting your mattress inside its new home should be relatively straightforward. Make sure to avoid bending and folding when you’re trying to get the mattress into your home. Additionally, make sure that you use caution when unwrapping your mattress. Take care to avoid cutting your mattress when removing packaging.
